So I've been giving quite alot of thought to the fellow the dreamers and DC have been referring to as "Emmet", and the fact that he also seems to be associated with West Virginia in some way (Everyone posting on the WVSolitude site seems to know someone by this name).

I started digging and came across a folk-tale from that region that's generally known as "wait until emmet comes..." or something similar. Here's the rundown i pulled off some literature forums:

Quote:

For years now “Wait Until Emmet Comes” has been one of my fave ghost story-folk tales (along with The Tailypoe and The Juniper Tree). The original author of this ancient tale is unknown and the story has been told and retold in countless versions over the last few hundred years. It is believed by most to have been a “slave tale” from the Old South, though some say it is older than that.

The story itself is rarely more than 4 or 5 pages long, and basically goes like this:

An evil preacher finds himself yet again running from an angry mob and seeking shelter in a new town. An angry storm is brewing all around and the town seems deserted, save a lone house with a light in the window. The preacher enters unannounced, and warms himself by the fire.

After a short while, a cat’s head, followed by its body, and than it’s tail, “floats” into the room, and reassembles itself as a big black cat. The cat talks to itself, arguing with itself over wither it should do it now or wait for Emmet to come. Do what we are never told.

Minutes later and second cat enters, in the same gruesome manner as the first. This cat once put together is even larger than the first. The two cats sit and argue over wither they should wait for Emmett or not.

This continues, each cat bigger than the last. Some versions have three cats, some have seven, others say the room became so full of black cats that there was no room left at all.

In any case one by one each cat enters one piece at a time, and joins the conversation:

“Should we do it?”

"Yes, I think we should…”

“No, Emmet would want to be here when we do it.”

“Yes, we should wait for Emmet.”

“We well wait for Emmet to come.”

Most of the enter story is nothing but dialogue between the cats. As the story moves on, the cats get bigger, the storm gets worse, and the preacher is growing more terrified. The story ends in one of two ways:

1.) The preacher becomes so terrified of the cats that he runs out swearing repentance of his sins. He is not noticed by the cats as they are still arguing about Emmett. The story ends, and you never find out whom Emmet is or what the cats wanted to do.

Or

2.) The preacher is so terrified that he can not move from his seat, and continues to listen to the cats. The front door opens, the cats all leap in wicked glee exclaiming “Emmet’s here!” The next scene we see is the townsfolk of the village below who hear screams coming from the house that used to belong to Emmet. The story end, you never find out who Emmet is or what the cats wanted to do.

Some theories speculate that Emmet was the devil, Satan, or a demon of some sort. Others say that Emmet was the king of the cats, the largest and most gruesome of them all.

Now, i understand the emmet we keep hearing about may be a completely different story, but if this West-Virginian tale has any significance here, then the folks heading out to Foresight Properties might be walking into a world of hurt...

we need to step back and look at what we know...

The ending I've always heard was that the guy waiting gets so scared that they run away, yelling after them "tell Emmet I couldn't wait!"

What we know about Emmet, so far:
-DC and the Swede both seem to treat him like some sort of Guru, or a cult leader. They're of the habit of quoting him all the time.

-He's also held in high regard by the people at WVSolitude, he seems to know more about the area than anybody else.

-He's a dreamer - we can infer this from this SF Bay post. He's also apparently better at dealing with the city than at least that guy and it looks like he's been in the city longer than BA.

-He seems to be a powerful dream, as suggested by "We dream of her dreaming of Emmet dreaming of her. "

-He is pursued - "She dreams of Emmet, and Emmet dreams of her, but they are both pursued." - DC

-He is old - "The nightmare is old, older than me and probably even older than Emmet." Which suggests that he's really old, as he's being used as the standard for things being old

-He

Wit and Wisdom of Emmet:
"Emmet tells us this means you will be here, too, with the Hidden and the Dreamers." - DC

"Emmet says there isn't much time" - DC

"As Emmet once said, we learn the most about ourselves when helping each other through the night. " - The Swede

"Emmet says there isn't much time, every day changes our history" - DC

That line reminded me of something I read over the weekend (from our good buddy Carroll; emphasis mine):

Quote:
The fourth principle is that ether also couples with itself to create etheric patterns corresponding to the possible past and futures of any moment. These patterns do not completely determine the future (or the past), for their coupling with matter is probabilistic and only one of the possible patterns will manefest as the actual future state of the system. Thus the behavior of matter, particularly in complex systems, remains partly chaotic or indeterminate. We should not fall into the trap created by memory and expectation of supposing that the physical past and future have any real existence. Only the present moment actually exists, and every moment of the present has its own unique pattern of past and future.

The often unrecognized problem here is that the initial conditions of an indeterminate event cannot be recovered after it has occured. We must therefore admit that any and all initial conditions which might have lead to the observed result, although our common sense strives to create an illusary certianty about the causes of events by imputing reverse causal connections. History is bullshit; it is as indeterminate as the future.

Was going to post it in another thread, but, like I said, that quote tickled my brain.

Well, DC's said that the Dreamers "Dream of cats, and dream of being cats," so that story may not be entirely unrelated...

Yeah, that's what I thought of when I read the story. At least, I think, we shouldn't toss the story out completely.

Really think you've got something here. Remember that Exu said "we could talk of folktales... none of them blossom without a seed of truth first dropped in the fertile soil of the imagination".

The Dreamers speak of Emmet like he's ancient OLD. Perhaps he is what inspired this folktale to begin with. Then there's the cat thing. Too close to be just coincidence, IMHO.
