They say nothing would happen if you wanked that out. Hm... Think I should try it on mine?? |
I say go for it! And then come to me and I'll set you up with some real music
And, while you're around, can you do me a favor? I got the hosting bill. It's crazy and you're going to laugh. They're trying to say we went through over 9TB of bandwidth last month. I was just about to call them, but it'd be nice to be confident going in. Can you peek at the logs or whatever you'd peek at to let me know what I need to know? Thanks! _________________ One man gathers what another man spills. |

No thanks on the music. I'd need to first wear the obligatory tie-dye shirt which, I am proud to say, I own none. :p
And going through 9GB of bandwidth is not a huge issue really. We do that at times.
And careful with your techie speak. GB and TB are completely different. _________________ $ PATH=pretending! /usr/ucb/which sense |

Hey now, let's not move into fashion. Why do I imagine you have 10 t-shirts and three pairs of jeans. All black. And, for the record, I don't own a tie dye shirt. Ok, not true. But I don't wear them anymore. I just hold on to them for the sentimental value.

Yes, I know. NINE TERABYTES. That's what they're trying to say, anyway. Could you poke around and let me know what we're really looking at? Please? _________________ One man gathers what another man spills. |

9 Terabytes? That's about a quarter of the library of congress.
Probably a typo or something. |

9TB? Is someone using this site to host a lot of very large files or programs? Some hidden pages? _________________ 'squeek' |

9TB is just not right, man. Like Poetic said, its gotta be a typo (granted, one mother of a typo... I hope someone gets a good finger-rapping with a stiff ruler. Or maybe this is going to be another one of those times where we have to debate what 1/100th of a cent is ) _________________ The artist is a person who is expert in the training of perception. |

A month is just under 3 million seconds so that's a constant 3 Megabytes per second (24 Mb/s) transfer, 24/7, over the entire month.
Anything else on the server other than the website?
Whenever I've logged in there's usually only a couple of people looking at the forums (including guests). So your web traffic should be pretty low. |

My bad. Sorry.
On the plus side, that's one sturdy server you've got there to handle that load. _________________ "Mayhem achieved, boredom relieved” - Bruce McCall |

Well this is definately weird. I have started to look at the server and while the hardware are not extremely tasked, we are definately going through a lot of network traffic. I have set up a sniffer and will generate logs soon.
Perhaps that will give us an idea of what is going on. I also run a port scan but I couldn't see anything unusual through my bloodshot eyes.
So...yeah....ick! Ideas folks? _________________ $ PATH=pretending! /usr/ucb/which sense |

Any rogue processes? FTP servers that shouldn't be there? I'm guessing the entire box is dedicated to the outpost? When I used to run Linux I had a tool, I can't remember what it was called, now, that would monitor/log all your system calls and throwed red flags every time a process did something it wasn't "supposed" to do. It's prolly a little late for that, tho, but it would definately be useful in trying to pin down exactly what's going on. The sniffer is probably your best bet. I'd be curious to see the results. Currently, I'm employed as a Java Devloper, but in my past life as an Intern, I did security-related research for the DoE. =) _________________ "A sword by itself rules nothing. A lot? As in a bit more than normal or, yeah, this outrageous bill is outrageously correct? Should I call and tell them they're off their rocker if they expect me to believe that we actually went through 9TB last month? Please tell me I'm not going to have to suck it up and pay this bill - it's going to put a big dent in our budget _________________ One man gathers what another man spills. |

Just calmly ask them if that 9TB was the 9TB of sentryoutpost they lost in 2006.
If so, tell them you've been looking all over for that.
If it isn't the 9TB they lost, ask them where it is, and say you'll get back to them when they find it.
If they find all your old files/archives/etc, and it's short by 8.5TB, tell them you can wait for them to find the rest. |
