Well...um....honestly? The weird ports and data and my real job have been keeping me crazy busy.

Let me see what I can figure out, OK?

Hey Bryce, I've been meaning to ask you this ever since HPHack's obtuse friend Exu showed up talking about hermetic processes and thaumaturgy, etc.

In Googling "as above, so below" I came across this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/As_Above%2C_So_Below

See anything familiar? So, what's the story behind your nick and avatar?

Hey Dante,

Magic's always been a big part of my life.

When I was a kid, I had a favorite uncle. He was a stage magician and he captured my imagination. I was completely entranced by him and everything he did.

I remember when I was six, he made me take the Magician's Oath and taught me a few tricks. What I ended up learning was just how technical magic actually is and how connected that was to practice. Anything worth doing, anything you want to look magical, you have to practice over and over before you can let the audience consume it. Scary to think of how many times I convinced myself that practicing would save me from a problem.

Not everything is as under your control as a magic trick.

I think that's why I keep re-reading that strange letter from B.

Over and over again.

The accusations that I do nothing are getting to me more lately. Mad

Bryce, thanks for sharing that..

So, a couple of relevant thoughts related to the newest Craigslists from our favorite psychic B.A.:

First of all, do you think that the newest Los Angeles Craigslist (that's where you're from, right?) could be directed at you?

http://losangeles.craigslist.org/lgb/mis/337167092.html

She mentions a man promising 'magic', which made me think of you. (the 'magic' part, not the broken promises part!)

Also, in the newest Harrisonburg Craigslist, there is another mention of the "gold robes"

http://harrisonburg.craigslist.org/mis/337122476.html

Isn't this from the dream that you posted on the wiki? We've seen this from B.A. before with the CatMan and the hotel and the men in the golden robes. What do you think that's all about?

Um...the LA one strikes a bit home for me. WTF is going on?

And by the way...

I really don’t know what to think about Stu’s newest blog post.

Makes me sound like an obsolete bumbler and our serious prediciment as a tabloid-scandal to be. Guess who stars in it? Not me, even though I’m the one looking through these sniffer logs and crap.

Marie, do you think you could do a more professional description of what’s been going on for our site? Meanwhile, I’m starting to develop a theory. On my own!! Without Stu telling me what to think. The horror! *groan* Rolling Eyes

It may be that I have too much Mountain Dew in me. I just can't sleep. I keep staring into the screen at that LA posting. It is getting me to thinking about things I haven't thought about in a really long time. The dead birds are really something.

Um... see, my uncle used to raise doves. He must of kept 30 of them at once. That is really the one thing I really remember about his garage where he worked... the cooing of doves.

What I couldn't ever figure out as a kid was why he had so many of those birds if he only used a couple in his act. Why did he need so many?

About the same time I stopped believing in Santa Clause I also realized something about my uncle. So one day I asked him, "It seems like even with all the eggs that hatch you always seem to have the same number of birds."

"Not all of the birds make it home from the show," he said to me and that was all I had to hear. I don't think my relatiionship with my uncle was ever quite as close after that. Once I realized the horrible things he would do just to make the crowd applaud with giddy delight.

It is no wonder grifters and three-card Monte dealers use the same tricks as magicians.

And I know that this is from staring at the screen for too long thinking about that stupid Craigs List but that is not going to be.

I'm not going to spend the rest of my life rehearsing for something anymore.

I'm sorry for you, that must have been a sobering moment in a young life. Crying or Very sad

No doubt!

It's sucky to say, but I'm not entirely sure my Ginsu-sharp mind is going to be enough to get Bryce through this (he's a touch old skool). It's been like trying to explain to Grandma why I don't want any more email forwards.

You know, Stu, we really don't know anything about you or your Ginsu-sharp mind. I'm looking around for some sliced tin cans or tomatos that have ANY of your blade marks on them, kiddo. Why don't you whip out some of your fucking nu skool Ginsu kung fu on something? Give Grandma a taste of what makes the monkey boy so special?

Otherwise, you're really nothing more than another fucking kid with a Dreamhost account, aren't you?

Wow I finally appreciate one of Art's posts!

So about the doves -- this begs the question, then -- how could B.A. have known that and why is it relevant here?

Aw, man, I already gave your momma a taste. Now your grandmomma wants some, too? I'm gonna have to clear off my schedule. The women in your family are just so demanding.

Uhm, wow guys, seriously, it's a blog. Since when has the internet been chock-full of truthiness? I'm sorry if you thought it was too ... uhm ... something ... but who in their right mind reads a blog like that and takes it seriously?

Bryce, thanks for the deluge of emails - they were a little rude, though. And weird. And the phone calls! I'm impressed you figured out my phone number here at work, but dude. That's ... you know ... creepy. And the messages on the company voice mail were, like, creepiER. Maybe you could work on weening yourself off the caffeine drip + code crunches and catch some sleep once in a while instead of staying up all night, panting into the receiver.

Seriously, I didn't mean to offend anyone - I'll be the first to admit that I'm a snarky ass who digs on weaving a good yarn. But really. I'm just honestly having a hard time imagining a bunch of robed cultists sitting around a draped computer monitor, surrounded by candles and the incessant drone of Cultic Chanting, typing things into a telnet god. We've just gotta be missing something, like a shopping toolbar of pure evil that sucks affiliate commissions into some Cult of America bank account, don't you think? That would at least make a little sense. Still weird, but with a little logic thrown in.

Stu, have you considered the possibility that maybe these calls and emails you are receiving *aren't* from Bryce? What are they like? What do they say, besides the, you know, panting? The boil.c was placed on your toilet^H^H^H site for a reason...

But I do agree that there's got to be something else we're missing. I just wish I knew which direction to look...

Look over there!

* Points *
* Runs away *
* Sound of car door slamming, engine revving, and tires squealing *

Seriously, though. Can someone split off the snarkiness & doves from the RSS part of this thread? It's getting lost down here in Meta.

Split. See, Marie? I can split all by myself when sufficiently motivated.

Yeah, I would say we've been missing something from the very beginning from BA sending out the packages. My problem is that I don't understand what BA is trying to say any more than I understand the tech stuff that is happening.

I do think that there has to be a connection between what BA is saying and those strange processes on the server. But that is obvious, so I'm not adding anything to the conversation.

Knowing that you're missing something doesn't make it easier to find when you've been looking pretty hard to find it, it just makes it more frustrating. Smile

Fair question. Fair question. I'll just pretend like you didn't call my spectacular Throne of Internet Reign a Throne of Defecation and say "after a few prior emails from Bryce, I know the guy's style of writing." It's pretty distinctive, even in bizarro mode. The panting was in an equivalent style. As for the boil... uhm, "luck of the draw?" Go me?

Tell me about it Confused I'd kill for some toolbar code to show up. Something I recognize and understand. Instead, I'm flouncing about blindly, poking away at new stuff and getting all hot and bothered. It's more interesting than my job, at least, earning it some bonus points until a droplet of dewy glory blebs off of it. (Which I have no doubt will happen. It looks too delicious to be the mere saltine we've got now.) Maybe the boil will start spitting out take-out menus and accepting orders for delivery. That'd be cool. I'm pretty hungry.
