Okay, so I'm completely incapable of aiding in any hacking, mudding, porting, commanding, etc. So I guess I'll muck around and putter about over some other stuff if no one minds me starting this thread. If you do, feel free to move it.

I like consistency, consistency tells us something. What exactly, I don't know, but with the plethora of city choices at CL....seems odd {given B.A.'s posting history} to choose the same city round after round.

There has to be a reason... the only thing I've found so far is that there is Arabic in all but one of the Harrisonburg listings. Maybe someone could "dream" about the site?

Quote:
Behind the post office, by the dumpster - w4m

You: Muttering. Murmuring. Growling.
Me: Kicking you away

Circling around. Refusing to leave. Begging. ... yakshof lana al majul ... yakshof lana al majul ... yakshof lana al majul ... over and over and over. I am bigger. I am stronger. But I cannot stop you.

Quote:
The Forgotton Angel - w4m

You: At the statue
Me: Meeting a friend

It's hard not to appreciate the beauty here. The grounds ache for someone to care, but that hardly matters. Nature paints her own canvas and man just can not compete. As I wind my way through, on paths marked only by the absence of gravestones, I can see her trying to grab the moon. I watch as the moon dances just out of her reach.

'ennahom yadunana abra Azif wa nahknu nastajeeb

I hear it from a distance knowing that, by the time I arrive, you'll be there. A shortcut through the graves, perhaps, showing no appreciation for the scenery that surrounds you. You walk around the statue to greet me, rubbing against her as you go. I watch as you walk towards me, stepping on her finger that lies broken on the ground. When I heard the scream, I couldn't help but wonder if it was her.

Quote:
'ennahom yadunana - w4m

You: Prowling around
Me: Passing by

I leave her there, broken, and wind my way through the stone lined paths. From this distance, I can see the crowd gathered around the old tower, their chants are nothing more than a muffled rhythm, a melodic hum that fits the mood of this place. We pass at the gate – the discordant scream silencing your whispers.

Quote:
Two steps back - w4m

You: In the Village in the City
Me: Trying to get there

I fought through the hostile crowd as I ran towards the village in the city. I needed to get there, I wanted to find you. Everyone, it seemed, was going the other way. Driven by panic, their momentum was pushing me - every step forward was taking two steps back. I had to find another way.

I turned off and found a way behind the buildings. Block after block, I ran down that little alley until I could no longer hear the shrieking thunder. I looked through a small opening between two buildings. The crowd was gone. I climbed over trash long since left to rot. Holding onto an old clothesline for support, it hit me. I had forgotten to bring anything to fix the angel.

Quote:
A million tiny crescents - w4m

You: Stalking
Me: Startled

My eyes blink. The mist fills the sky shattering the moonlight into a million tiny crescents suspended in the air. I smile as I watch them fade into an eerie veil draped over her shoulders. The aching sorrow returns. I wish there was something that I could do to ease her grief.

yakshof lana al majhul

The sudden noise startles me. I didn't notice you sneak in.

Did you see what I saw? I know not to expect an answer.

Quote:
Keeping her company - w4m

You: Stalking me
Me: Wondering why

As I open the gate, a chill goes down my spine.

Huwa yafteahku-l-băb leelazeena yakhdumunahu

I know that it's you. Hiding. Stalking.

It doesn't matter. I wind my way through the stones. Looking for her face to shine through the mist.

When I get there, I sit down next to the dead grass where her finger once laid. I wonder if she knows the guilt I feel. I wonder if she thinks that's why I come here every night. I wonder if that's what you think as you watch from the shadows.

I don't know why I couldn't do it. Why I waited. I could have fixed her.

Now it is gone. I don't know where. I don't know why.

I can't change what happened. But I can come here and keep her company. And, every night, I can expect to see you or, at least, hear you. I don't know why you come. I wish you would tell me.

Quote:
Swinging through the mist - w4m

You: Stalking me
Me: Going mad

Before I know it, the familiar ache returns to my bones. Soon I'll see the mist tumbling through the fence. And there I'll sit.

Unable to do anything.

Write a word.
Leave a rope.
Lose a finger.

Every night. Here I am. Trapped in hell. Or some version of it.
... al-majaal yakshof lana al-majaal yakshof lana al-majaal ...

Every night. You are here. Stalking me. Taunting me.
... al-majaal yakshof lana al-majaal yakshof lana al-majaal ...

I'm in no mood.
... al-majaal yakshof lana al-majaal yakshof lana al-majaal ...

Leave me alone.
... al-majaal yakshof lana al-majaal yakshof lana al-majaal ...

Go away!
... al-majaal yakshof lana al-majaal yakshof lana al-majaal ...

JUST LET ME LEAVE!
... al-majaal yakshof lana al-majaal yakshof lana al-majaal ...

I look down and grab the biggest stick that I can see.
I swing through the mist.
Again and again and again.

... al-majaal yakshof lana al-majaal yakshof lana al-majaal

And I hear the crack.

Are you sure that's Arabic? Could we get a translation?

It may be related: The most famous version of the necronomicon (and the one atributed to Lovecraft's pen) was supposedly written originally in Arabic.

It's definitely Arabic. Sorta funky transcription, but Arabic.

Perhaps the connection with Harrisonburg is through a specific person? Any former Sentry Outpost people there? Perhaps Peter? Or maybe StuR knows someone there?

I think there might be a connection between Harrisonburg and the websites, or at least the server.

That's Virginia? West Virginia? That whole region of the country is kind of a messy blur to me.

My only real thoughts about this thread are ones more filled of dread. Those might be the list of Craigslists posts with Arabic, but one of those (barely different from one you quoted) actually came from my dreams.

Just change the last word to an unintelligible mutter and that's my dream.

Sorry to be obtuse, this is all getting very MUDdy to me...

To which one are you referring? And it was unintelligible? Do you think it was Arabic again? If it was could you try to Arablish it, you did pretty well at it before. Or is that the one you mean?

Some of the package contents had links to Jamestown in Virginia - so I was wondering if there was some connection there.

... but Richmond would be the closest Craigslist city to Jamestown rather than Harrisonburg.

Sorry, Cem, this topic is confusing for me too. Back when I had my little infestation problem, I had a dream about a cave and a whisper, where I always feel like I missed hearing the end of the phrase. You guys ended up telling me that dream babble was almost Arabic. I think BA also responded to that dream, she had one about being in cave. Then I had the dream about the palanquin that had the same babble in it. When I emailed the dream to BA, I changed the last word to something you guys thought I might have heard. And BA changed that word to something else in her response, which you have as the Boston ad in the list above.

So that dream has been through the wringer so many times that I'm not even sure who's dream it is anymore.

hey I thought Harrisonburg was in Pennsylvania.

But it must be Virginia.

Same question - anyone from here know anyone who is there now? or maybe was there? I'm so curious about Peter. What happened to him? Where is he?

I know that sounds rude, and I'm sorry. But this whole creepy story is worth trying to sort out.

(peter wasn't the sacrifice in the dream...food for the birds was he? Wink )

Okay that's why I was confused, I had only listed Harrisonburg CLs in my initial post and commented that 6/7 contained Arabic. I couldn't see how the last word of any of them could be changed easily to reflect what you were saying. However, James Stone made a second list of all CLs containing Arabic (6/8 of which were Harrisonburg), and the Boston CL is in that list.

Thanks.

I'm bumping this thread back up because I recently re-discovered something interesting in a search from some of the older posts here on S.O.

Back when we were hounding Howard about the horrible incident involving the Miskatonic faculty and students, he corrected our assumption that the infamous cave was near Arkham:

Howard wrote:
Sapagoo wrote:

There was an experiment in one of the caves in Arkham. It was a physics experiment, but they needed the CS department's help.

No, the caves were NOT up here, they were down somewhere in remotest Appalachia, not even open to the public. It was all hick rural sherrifs until they brought in the Feds. Then it took the Feds a week before they gave up the rescue. It took another week before they abanonded trying to even find the bodies. [emphasis added]

So, assuming this is all connected somehow, this might explain B.A.'s seeming obsession with Harrisonburg.

Is Harrisonburg near the location of this cave? Can anyone confirm that? Howard?

Most of the Arabic that we've seen in the Harrisonburg CLs has already been translated, more or less. Mostly because the same phrases also showed up in the screamer text from the Ports, here and here.

So:
"yakshof lana al majul" has been translated as "He reveals to us the unknown."

"'ennahom yadunana abra Azif wa nahknu nastajeeb" has been translated as "They are calling us through Azif and we answer."

"Huwa yafteahku-l-b?b leelazeena yakhdumunahu" has been translated to: "He opens the door for those who serve him."

"Fal mahdee wal hkaderr wal mustakbal y'azubuuna kullahom fee providentia" has been translated to: "Past, present, future, all are one in Providence."
